For the last several months, I have been looking forward to our current series, Heroes. It all began last Sunday with dad kicking it off as we honored our military. Tomorrow, I continue the series as we look at what the Biblical guide to heroes. We’ll look at how heroes differed from the Old to the New Testaments. The heroes in the Old Testament were regarded for their warring abilities and their valor. On the contrary, in Matthew 20:27-29, Christ instructed His disciples by saying,

26 It’s not going to be that way with you. Whoever wants to be great must become a servant.
27 Whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave.
28 That is what the Son of Man has done: He came to serve, not be served — and then to give away his life in exchange for the many who are held hostage.”

Next Sunday, we will look at the role of the trusty sidekick. You may think sidekicks are only for pop culture. Garfield and Odie; Andy and Barney; Batman and Robin; Hiro and Ando; as well as Johnny Carson and Ed McMahon are not the only dynamic duos. Before these teams his the stage, there was Paul and Barnabas, David and Jonathan, Moses and Joshua, Ruth and Naomi, Elijah and Elisha. So, how does this play out for us as believers? You’ll have to come find out.

Today, as I was reading through my blogroll, I found Mark Batterson’s (from National Community Church) post on their next series called Hero. National Community Church provided the inspiration for the video we created for the Sunday after Easter. We also found the inspiration for our Small Group Catalogs when we saw their Small Group Atlas. Anyway, Pastor Mark listed some of the great heroes from scripture and I was amazed to see that it almost mirrored some of my personal notes from my study on Thursday! It’s always cool to see God saying the same thing in other churches at the same time.

Anyway, I hope to see you this weekend at The ROCK.
