Today’s post (like there is one every day!) comes from my eldest, tallest, most blonde headed son, Gabriel. Today, Gabriel received the first place award in the 2005 Picturing Poetry Series. It is a part of the Writers In Action (WIA) program in the New Hanover County School System. The amazing part is that Gabriel is not a part of this program. At his school, they do not have this program for 3rd grade students. But, his teacher read this poem and said she wanted to show it to the the WIA teacher at his school. After showing it to her, they decided to enter it into the contest anyway.

The contest was judged by several very well published authors as well as the chairman of the Creative Writing Department at UNC-Wilmington. The librarian told us today that, of all the winners, Gabriel was the only one that won unanimously! We are very proud of this achievement. Well, I could write several more paragraphs about this accomplishment, but it would be more fitting to simply let you read the poem yourself. So, without further ado, I present “My World” by Gabriel McGee

My World

Some days I feel bad, low and afraid.
On those rare occasions,
I go to my perfect world.
The best place ever,
A wonderful escape from the cold black streets
And the fear of night lurking around the corner.
I go there for complete happiness and relaxation.
A place where animals and humans sing in perfect harmony.
My world is a place where clothes and jewelry
Don’t hide the person inside.
So one night,
Any night,
Look up at the stars and you might see me,
Returning from my world.
